This Wednesday, March 11, at 19:30, in the Meeting Room of the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Geography and History, the Urban Futures Seminar (SFU) of the IDEGA will feature Javier Ordás del Corral (University of León). The researcher will give a talk on the topic “Urban vulnerability in the city of León”, which will be followed by an open discussion with all those present.
Why do some neighbourhoods concentrate situations of social disadvantage within cities? Urban vulnerability has become a key concept for analysing how processes of spatial segregation, social exclusion, and degradation of the built environment combine and materialise in the territory.
This presentation addresses this phenomenon on the basis of recent research focused on the city of León. The study proposes an empirical analysis that examines the spatial distribution of the population receiving social benefits during the period 2017–2020 in that city, combining statistical analysis and cartography produced with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The results make it possible to identify and characterise the neighbourhoods where situations of vulnerability are concentrated and to reflect on how these processes manifest themselves in medium-sized cities in the interior of Spain.
