A report of the IDEGA values the artificial intelligence as an opportunity for the economy galician

The special report on the galician economy published annually by the Institute of Studies and Development of Galicia (IDEGA) analyzed in 2025 the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on employment. The document evidence that the productivity of the companies is benefited when the IA complements the people and processes, but it is reduced when there is a change in the flow of work. Senen Barro, coordinator and author of the report, along with Marcos Almeida Cerreda, Luis Míguez Macho and Luis Alberto Otero, says that one should not disregard professionals, but add to them the capabilities offered by the AI.

Galicia boasts the implementation of the AI below the state average (10,3% vs. 11.4%) and of the European Union (13,5%). “We are not interested in the number of companies that have adopted AI, but in if they are taking revenue. Smes should rethink how to integrate AI to innovate, what is the correct use, there is a whole way of adoption of value-added” explains Barro. To achieve this, he emphasizes the need for companies to get in contact with experts who can provide advice as in the present, the presence of talent in the AI in business is reduced (1,89% of the experts of ICT).

The paper reflects about the law for the development and the progress of artificial intelligence in Galicia (LIAG), which must be materialize aspects of its regulation, as absolutely respectful with the regulatory framework that Spain is going to develop, to add steadiness in the economy of galicia. “We need to know what we can do, and what not”, added Barro. In their analysis, the experts open a window of light that Galicia has all the instruments required for the adoption of AI to impact on productivity, such as the ICT sector, the R&D activity and the formation of talent in the public universities.

Among the recommendations set out by the authors, the goal of the creation of platforms for secure exchange of data between companies and the public sector; a programme to encourage the adoption of AI in smes; intensive programs to improve the skills and retraining; to strengthen the managerial capabilities; create a system of state-regional statistics qualifications equivalent and open to be compared with transparency; and to solve the gap of marketing, sales and R&D, where Galicia has a lower use of AI. We must bet on reliable AI: the explanation, the human oversight, security. “Reliable AI is cost-effective“, the report concludes.
