The Institute for the Studies and Development of Galicia (Idega) is a University Center of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), created in 1976, with the purpose of promoting a scientific investigation of excellence in the social sciences. Since its origin, Idega works to contribute to the generation of a rigorous knowledge of the social, economic and territorial reality of Galicia, as well as to spread the results of the investigation for the benefit of the society.
Throughout the almost fifty years of their trayectory, IDEGA continued to approach the main challenges that Galician society faced. In 2022, the institute carried out a reformulation of its scientific agenda with the purpose of adapting it to the new social uphelds, characterized by the need for broad and inclusive approaches.
In the context of research in social and legal sciences in Galicia, the Idega presents itself as a multidisciplinary center of reference in research and formation. It integrates knowledges and capacities from different areas — social, political, economic, legal, technological, business, xeographic, territorial and cultural — with the purpose of promoting projects that analyze and propose responses to the main contemporary socioeconomic challenges.
The research activity of the IDEGA structurs itself arround a large array of themes such as the economic fabric, the disruptive technologies, the demographics and the territory, and the energy and the environment, addressing key questions for a sustainable development, the social cohesion and the wellfare of the Galician citizens.
