The Spanish Association of University Professors of Mathematics for Economics and Business (ASEPUMA) chose the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) as the academic venue for its 34th edition. Organized by the University Institute for Studies and Development of Galicia (IDEGA), the conference brought together more than 80 specialists to discuss the challenges facing this field.
The opening ceremony was presided over by the president of the organizing committee in Santiago, Xesús Pereira; the director of IDEGA, Rubén C. Lois; the president of ASEPUMA, Mar Arenas; and Professor of Physics Pablo Taboada. During the conference, dynamics were created to foster debate and innovation in Mathematics, Statistics, and Quantitative Methods, promoting the exchange of ideas and the scientific-academic method. In a context of profound changes such as the emergence of artificial intelligence, experts highlighted the importance of Applied Mathematics in the Social Sciences for understanding and improving our environments.

“Economists, geographers, and sociologists alike need the support of mathematical modeling for our projects and to strengthen our methodologies,” explained Lois. ASEPUMA aims to study, research, and improve mathematics teaching, as well as promote research to the wider community and share the results obtained by its members.
In this thirty-fourth edition, the event seeks to establish lines of collaboration among the participating universities to consolidate a strong academic community that will initiate joint projects and exchange innovative experiences. “This science has adapted to change while maintaining a commitment to excellence and research,” explained Mar Arenas, president of the association, at the opening ceremony.
Throughout the conference, the ASEPUMA Annals Awards will be presented, recognizing the scientific activity of the association’s members, as well as the ASEPUMA Teaching Award, which highlights the work presented related to teaching in Quantitative Methods for Economics and Business.
