International congress ‘Territory, Institutions and Identities’

Territory is much more than a physical environment where human life unfolds. Since time immemorial, physical space has been subject to processes of conceptualization and appropriation by individuals, communities, and political structures, giving rise to overlapping scales and spaces structured by visible and invisible lines that functioned as borders and, in turn, contributed to the ongoing construction and reconstruction of identities.

The international congress ‘Territory, Institutions, and Identities’ seeks to explore the relationships between physical and administrative space, as well as analyze the role of borders, territorial and administrative institutions, and the interactions between the identities that residents and visitors attribute to places. The conference welcomes methodological contributions and innovative perspectives in both basic and applied research.

Rodrigo Pousa, a researcher in the ANTE group, is organizing the congress in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts at the University of Porto and the FRAMESPA research laboratory at the University of Toulouse-Jean Jaurès.

It will be held in a hybrid format, both in person at IDEGA and online, on June 1st and 2nd, 2026, and will address key topics in the historical geography of the Iberian and American territories.
