Seminar: ‘Gender Gap in Digital Payments in Ecuador’

Next Thursday, July 16, at 4:30 p.m., the Doctoral Program in Regional Development and Economic Integration (DRIE) of the GAME group is organizing a new seminar at the Faculty of Economics and Business.

On this occasion, Cinthya Daniela Barrera Rodríguez will present her work, “Gender Gap in Digital Payments in Ecuador” a study focused on gender inequalities in access to and use of digital payment methods. Its objective is to determine whether the observed differences between men and women reflect broader structural inequalities or persist even after considering the conditions that influence digital financial inclusion. The study begins with a central question: to what extent is the gender gap in digital payments explained by observable differences between men and women? From there, using empirical estimation with probit models and decomposition techniques, the study examines the magnitude of the gap, its composition, and the potential role of digital connectivity, measured through internet access, as a complementary channel for expanding the use of digital payments.

In summary, this research aims to provide evidence on whether women’s digital financial exclusion is explained by a gender gap or by structural inequalities that limit their effective access to the digital payments ecosystem.
